When I’m Not Reading…The Book Cases are Finally Here!

For the past week I’ve been fiddling with putting together my new book cases. Okay fiddling might be an understatement. After two trips to Ikea with my “lil sis” I came home with three lovely book cases and a cabinet thing. It turned out one of the boards for one of the larger book cases was broken…so back to Ikea. A grand total of three trips to Ikea and I was ready to put assemble my furniture. It only took 5 days. I would have taken some pictures of the whole ordeal, but it’s too painful to remember…no seriously…my fingers were numb from all the screwing and covered with cuts. I “broke down” and borrowed a power drill. YAY.

Furniture put together, the next problem was my amount of books. I have too many. I might have a problem. Is there treatments for obsessive collecting of books?

My Little reading space (I have a little collection of Starbucks cups from all over the world.).

All Paranormal/YA/Fantasy/SF…and a few romances (the space with no books in is where Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress books belong. BFF please to be reading faster.)

My owl, Alexia, hanging out next to Cail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate. The awesomesauce Zigster made her for me. I got it when I met her in NYC earlier this year.

Sunkisz sent me Duckula. He’s just waiting for Pengula to show up. Hmm Waiting for Pengula? I think he might have to wait a while. (Sun I miss you. It’s been too long.)

Missie and LanYap sent me Mr. Voodoo. He’s chilling with Sookie and Eric (the Swedish flag is also from Ikea). Mr. Voodoo might move soon though.

DSCF0114

Yeah I have a thing for vampires…all versions of them…even the sparkly ones.

A little mix of everything incl. my new obsession: Paula Quinn’s MacGregor Series and Children of the Mist series. *Sighs* Tristan, Rob, Callum and Graham. Highlanders, Claymores, plaid, and lovely lasses who kick ass.

You can’t forget the Brothers.

Mr. Voodoo might move here and hang out with the Madonnas. This space needs a little work. Maybe some flowers? Oh and I want Lady of Guadalupe poster.

There you have it. My re-decorating project is still not complete. I have to do a desk area over the weekend and I have some frames I’d like for some posters and another special “book” project I’m doing.

Is it weekend yet?

Red Velvet Reapers!!

I finally have the time to post my entry for the Night Huntress Virtual Bake-Off Contest! I was a little pressed for time and space (I will not rant, but see earlier post on the lacks of my oven), but I decided to try something I’ve never made before – red velvet cupcakes – or in this case Red Velvet Reapers.

IMAG0160

They turned out pretty great. I have no idea what they are suppose to taste like, but they were yummie!

The inspiration for these treats were of course the Red Reaper herself. I was going to decorate them with a kind of chocolate we have here in Denmark called Kattetunger (Cats’ Tongues), but it turns out they are either not made anymore or very hard to get your hands on because they were impossible to find.

Review of Haunted by Your Touch by Tradermare…

I can’t believe it’s Sunday already! I’ve been busy with packing away all my books and clearing my apartment for the arrival of my new book cases (YAY!), work, and then the unexpected, but happy occasion, of my brother’s engagement yesterday. Steampunk Sunday has, thus, been cut from the program today, which in this case is not a great loss, instead you will get a wonderful review of Jeaniene Frost’s short story, Night’s Darkest Embrace, from the soon to be released Haunted by Your Touch. My wonderful friend, Tradermare, is once again guest reviewing on my blog. Give her a warm welcome everybody!

cvr9781439166765_9781439166765 Title: Haunted by Your Touch

Author(s): Shayla Black, Jeaniene Frost, Sharie Kohler

Publisher: Pocket Star

Date of Publication: October 26th, 2010

ISBM: 9781439166765

Summary:

Enter the dark realm of Nocturna in Jeaniene Frost's redhot tale, where blisteringly sexy Raphael dominates the demons of a lawless dimension and tries to help a beautiful young woman avenge her cousin's disappearance. In the shadowy world of Shayla Black's Doomsday Brethren, magical warrior Raiden vows to protect his woman and their unborn youngling from evil—and deliver her safely to another man. But once he's saved her, can he let her go? Lycans rule the night in Sharie Kohler's suspenseful story, as a fiery woman stalks mysterious Luc, the undeniably hypnotic being she believes can save her from turning . . . if she kills him. Danger beckons in these captivating paranormal tales that will tempt readers to the edge and leave them begging for more. (From www.simonandschuster.com)

Review:

I was lucky enough to obtain an ARC of a new paranormal romance anthology, Haunted by Your Touch, containing three novellas, one of them by Jeaniene Frost. I was curious to read something other than a Night Huntress story from Jeaniene Frost, and she did not disappoint. Unfortunately, because of real life and the time management challenges it brings, I have not had time to read Mated by Shayla Black, or Darkest Temptation by Sharie Kohler, the other two stories in the anthology, so I will not be reviewing those offerings.

This review may contain minor spoilers.

In the short story, Night’s Darkest Embrace, Jeaniene Frost has once again created a world where we can believe that supernatural beings live among us, hiding their true nature, undetected by most humans. While these demons, partials, and fallen angels coexist with us, gateways or portals between our world and theirs allow them to travel between exciting and sometimes terrifying parallel realms.

At the center of the story is Mara—a feisty, gun-toting, dimension-hopping partial demon, seeking to avenge her cousin’s disappearance. Mara’s demon attributes allow her to detect and pass through the gateway into Nocturna, an alternate dimension where it is always night. Her search for her cousin’s abductors begins with her return to Bonecrushers bar, where demons congregate in the darkness for warm beer, among other things.

Mara’s prime suspect is Nocturna’s ruler, Rafael. Convinced he knows more than he is telling her, Mara must fight her personal feelings for Rafael as she pieces together the events of that fateful night, and her impulsive reactions may end up jeopardizing her existence and the existence of others in both the demon and human realms.

As always, Jeaniene Frost gives us interesting, complex, and at times, frightening characters that propel the story to its satisfying conclusion. In Mara, we get a character full of determination to uncover the truth behind what happened to her cousin, with a spunky personality and fighting spirit that will remind you of other beloved Jeaniene Frost female protagonists. As the lead male character, Rafael has all the right moves, both in and out of the bedroom, and the description of one of his “attributes” left me breathless. The romantic scenes did not disappoint.

Jeaniene Frost paints a rich landscape with her descriptions of Nocturna and the other realms in this novella, along with creating interesting rules governing mating and feeding habits. The fast paced, action/romance captivated and satisfied, while leaving me yearning for more stories from Nocturna and this world of demons, partials, and fallens.

Overall, an enjoyable read. Four out of five teacups

Night Huntress Virtual Bake-Off Contest…

Oh this is so exciting! My wonderful friend Trader (Tradermare) just announced the Night Huntress Virtual Bake-Off Contest. I’ve known about the contest for a while, but it’s been hush hush and there were a few practical issues that had to be settled first. I can’t tell you enough how excited I am about this, I even signed up for some cupcake and cake decorating class in November because of it, I felt inspired and wanted to do something fun this autumn. Below is Trader’s post, incl. rules etc, from the Frost Cemetery boards.

Trader made these lovely treats over the weekend.

Are you getting ready for Halloween? Making lots of goodies for your trick or treaters? Perhaps a lovely little blood snack is on your menu or maybe some ghoul goodies?

Steampunk Sunday: Steampunk Costume….sort of…

Steampunk Sunday banner

Friday I was supposed to go to a costume party after work, but ended up going home to sleep instead. This little post will be about the costume I was going to wear, had I gone to the party.

Originally, it was just going to be a normal costume party, but they changed it the last minute to a heroes and villains party. I had already figured out my costume, a Victorian lady, so I decided to go as Alexia Tarabotti. Not an easy thing to do since I look NOTHING like her, but I figured I could get away with it since the other guests probably hadn’t read the books. I had my friend, Maria, take some pictures of me today wearing the costume.

DSCF0072 DSCF0077

The hat and parasol were bought at the Goth store in Copenhagen called The Black Sheep. The vest and gloves are my own. The blouse, which I tweaked a little, is Maria’s. I made the skirt over EIGHT years ago for my high school graduation gala, and it still fits…kind of…it’s a little snug around the waist area. Under the clothes I’m wearing an old corset bought at the vintage store about 7 years ago…it’s pretty much falling apart. I’m wearing a little pocket watch bought on www.etsy.com, a ring and locket necklace bought at H&M in NYC and some pretty little earrings my mom gave me years ago.

DSCF0095 DSCF0102 DSCF0104

I have short hair, dyed for the occasion, but I managed to pin it up in the back and a brisk walk in stormy weather is to thank for the waves in the front…sadly also the wrinkles in my skirt.

I’m pretty sure I had more fun today than I would have had I gone to the party Friday…I heard it turned into a pub crawl instead of an actual costume party.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Tea, Autumn, Audio Books & Comfort Food…

4545700102_0031ab6281_z_large

It’s October and officially autumn. Yay! I love autumn; the trees changing colours, the smells, the days that slowly become short and the longer, darker nights. What could be more perfect than sitting in your favourite chair with a hot cup of tea and a book, while the wind howls outside your window. A simple thing, yet so delightful. The only thing better would be curling up in bed with a book, or in this case several audio books, a cup of tea and a serious amount of comfort food. Okay, no food in the bed because that, with my lack of co-ordination, would turn into a big mess.

I’m an Anglophile at heart. A strong cup of tea with lots of milk can solve pretty much anything.

Sadly, audio books are expensive. Most libraries (unless you live in Denmark) have a wide variety of audio books, especially classics. I love libraries so I highly suggest you support your local branch and get your books from there. A few months ago I became a member over on www.audible.com. They have different, and very affordable, memberships or you could just buy books without being a member. The only downside about audio books is that a lot narrators are horrible, which ruins the experience. One of the first books I bought was Meg Cabot’s Insatiable, so far I’ve only been able to listen to the first chapter because the narrator pretty much butchers the book with her voice. But, I’ve also found some great ones…

51dARyNBguL._SL175_ The last few days I’ve been listening to Paula Quinn’s Ravished by a Highlander.

Forbidden love, undeniable desire....

Davina Montgomery is no ordinary English lady. For her own protection, she’s been locked away from society, her true identity the Crown’s most closely guarded secret. Until a shocking betrayal—and a bold rescue—land her in the arms of a fierce Highlander, a powerful warrior whose searing gaze and tantalizing touch awaken her body and soul.

As the firstborn son of a powerful Scottish laird, Robert MacGregor has no loyalty to the English throne, but he’s not the kind of man to leave a woman in distress, even if she is English. He vows to deliver Davina to safety, unharmed and untouched. Yet one stolen kiss leaves them both smoldering with desire and desperate for more. With Davina’s secret threatening to destroy his clan, Rob must choose between everything he holds dear and the one woman he can’t live without. (From www.audible.com)

I adore historical romance novels. I devour them. I grew up reading Barbara Cartland novels and short story magazines. Not to forget watching the movie adaptations…Lord Vulcan still makes me swoon…”Shall I make you fall in love with me, Serena?”…Gah! Dead!…Moving on. Now, the narrator of Ravished by a Highlander, Carrington MacDuffie, is great. The way she changes her voice for each character makes the experience so much more enjoyable, especially when she does Rob’s voice.

51ygtKtgAmL._SL175_ Audible also have the sequel, Seduced by a Highlander, which is the story of Rob’s scoundrel brother, with the pantie-dropping smile, Tristan.

Sins that can’t be forgiven, passions that can’t be denied….

Tristan MacGregor is famed throughout the Highlands as a silver-tongued seducer and an unrepentant rogue. Bold and charming, he’s dallied with many women, yet none as mysterious as the lass he steals a kiss from at king’s court. Little does he know this beauty is one of his clan’s greatest enemies.

Isobel Fergusson has despised the bloodthirsty MacGregors ever since they murdered her father. She’s horrified to learn that the handsome stranger she kissed is of this clan. But Tristan means to possess her at any cost, and Isobel’s body turns traitor at his touch. Can a man she’s sworn to hate be the only one she can ever love? (From www.audible.com)

I haven’t bought this one yet, but I can’t wait to listen to it.

410Tvp95sML._SL175_

Another great listening experience was Keri Arthur’s Full Moon Rising (the unabridged version). I’ve read and liked the books, but listening to it was even better. Again the narrator, Justine Eyre, was great.

It’s been a long few weeks; I decided to treat myself to a little comfort food and a good audio book. To me the ultimate comfort food is a huge pot of chili and some corn bread. Really, you can’t go wrong with that.

DSCF0068  Waiting…

DSCF0070

Yum!

To accompany this feast I bought Kiersten White’s Paranormalcy. I have about an hour left to listen to and so far I love it. It’s hilarious as well as engaging.

Evie’s always thought of herself as a normal teenager, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours. But Evie’s about to realize that she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal. (From www.audible.com)

I’m going to buy the paperback, there are some parts I’d like to read in print.

The good thing about Audible is that you can listen to a little bit of the books before you buy them, which I should have done with the Cabot book. I had a little trouble with downloading the books at first. It turns out the Audible program doesn’t work with Google Chrome, so use Firefox or some other browser when/if you decide to use Audible.

Happy listening!
